Your nebulous society is composed of people. If you preserve monetary system and make the main incentive to "win people society's respect" (i.e. win people's respect) you have basically meritocracy. And that one we already tried and it does not work, because who will decide what contributions should win people people's respect? Simply give. For that you need neither money nor reliance on respect of others.
