Yeah, I get it, after all you've mentioned it toward the end of the article. But that's exactly the point--*because* those folks are evil and insane, the original message looks like it does today (it justifies their goals). This pertains to all religious folk. Just look what happened to Buddha who dismissed all gods and spiritual BS, who is now revered as bona-fide deity residing in highest heaven and all.

And yes, the same can be said about atheists. Only in their case it all manifests as cynicism, nihilism, and whatnot. All of which are pretty inadequate responses even if one assumes that universe is indifferent (which I quite disagree with as I would rather say it is impartial, but that's another story altogether).
