What’s Up?
So, a new day came and, lo and behold, without any corrective intervention on my part, sans writing a parting message and sending some warm regards in the direction of Medium folks, the twelve hours I’ve got allotted to remedy my alleged breaking of Medium rules have since passed, yet my account is still here.
Color me genuinely surprised. But also sort of not. Perhaps the best word to describe it would be perplexed. At this point, I have absolutely no clue what this extempore is all about.
Since my account is still alive and well and there was neither a follow up mail from Medium in the vein of, “We reviewed the situation and changed our mind” or, “Your ‘probation’ period has been extended to X-hours”, nor an additional specification of the problem or any other further notice in any form — simply crickets — I have hard time to figure out what’s actually going on.
Is this an over-eager AI at work? Some butthurt Medium insider with access to administrative tools abusing their power? Is this just a display of mindless adherence to company guidelines? Something else entirely? In any case, it seems that at Medium the right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing. And I don’t mean it in the original sense of humility.
It also highlights how broken Medium actually is. From overarching “vision,” if it can be even called that way at this point in time, all the way down to technological nuts and bolts. But that is, sort of, to be expected when, as I found out yesterday, the (not-so-)new CEO of Medium is Coach Tony, who may be a nice fellow for all I know, but who invokes in me the image of Joel Osteen becoming the Pope (though, that’s more a symptomatic result than the actual cause). Frankly, I wonder if those 29 people laid off last year were the correct batch.
Well, in any case, my stay here became strangely life-like: now I never know when the bell will toll for me and I’ll be cut off just like that.
Oh, the irony :D
