What a roller-coaster. But indeed, “Deserve’s got nothing to do with it.” I think, a better question might be, "What does make one happy in the first place?" As far as I can tell, fulfilling one's ambitions or averting impeding dangers has a pretty temporary effect in terms of contentment.

Also, you write a lot about morality. As I see it, the basic “moral laws” (the universal five don’ts that can be found all over the globe) are quite natural (that is, unless one thrives on conflict, violence, anger, fear, and such) and definitely causal. Then again, even those laws are not a surefire guarantee for contentment. They merely make the chances much, much higher.
