What a coincidence! I literally grew up with that song though a few decades later after it was released. I didn't understand it at the time as English is not my mother tongue. And obviously even if I did understand the words I doubt I would get the meaning. I used to hum it quite often. The song is simply fabulous and, as you say, the meaning (which I eventually understood) is today more apt then ever (though I would use an example of e.g. Amazon workers buying stuff from Amazon or something along those lines).
