Well, only sort of. I presuppose neither intent (telos) nor the consequence (i.e. that the evolution inevitably goes in the "right" direction, toward the goal). Though I admit, I don't presuppose it only because I don't know whether such goal really exists. The meanings/functions may be outcomes of pure chance (though, some obviously depend on others--previous, higher-level, etc. but that's beside the point). It does not bother me very much which case it is, because the "now" is as it is either way, and I, honestly, cannot see the difference in implications.
