Those religions rule us uninterruptedly for almost six millennia ever since the clerical monarchy was invented in Sumer (and, for roughly the last four millennia, it's basically the only socioeconomic system in existence on Earth).

While in the past god-kings were explicit (and common), in this day and age the underlying ideology only became more obvious (and explicit again). So, I would not say that those religions try to regain power -- they never lost it -- the problem really is that vast majority of people still believes in that stuff because they don't know who they are.
