There is a huge difference between embracing technological progress as a tool to solve actual problems (or push the envelope of knowledge, etc.), and inventing problems to justify transhumanist (but basically any) ideology. Even more so, if that ideology presupposes painting indiscriminately over the whole species with technology designed for niche purposes. What could go wrong, right?
