The only problem with this is that countercultures are not "outside". After all, they counter whatever may be the prevalent culture of the age, thus are utterly dependent on it. They are merely responses, not answers. Hence they are easily coopted into mainstream. Case in point, your "beloved" Christianity -- as a subsequent misguided movement that formed around the followers of that Jesus guy, it posed no problem for Rome to coopt it, while the original ideas, which were not exactly against the Roman or Jewish culture of the day but more for a particular way of life, never went mainstream.
