Setting aside the fact that neither life nor personhood deviate from expected evolutionary processes of the known universe, hence can hardly by considered anomalies, there is also a third option, that of absence of (intrinsic) value altogether. Then, what would matter would be only the mutual systemic interdependence. Case closed.
For whatever reason, Great Oxygenation Event comes to my mind -- anaerobic cyanobacteria largely killed themselves off by simply being anaerobic cyanobacteria, but paved the way for all types of life that came after, and which (for obvious reasons) thrives in oxygen rich environment.
