Seeing through all narratives is a must. But I would say that, since we are a “symbolic” species, we are enmeshed in narratives whether we like it or not. So, perhaps it's necessary to update them to reflect the current times. After all, in times of Jesus it may have been the pinnacle of bliss just to sit in comfort and play the harp in ecstasy. Blessed be the oral tradition! (But not the Vedic kind which is based on rote memorization and is technically not different from the written one.) From such a perspective, it makes a lot of sense why e.g. the sole written part of Judaism ought to be ten commandments only.
