Philosophers aspire to replace priests in that they are inclined to impose their "reconciliation" on what they perceive as the dumb, unwashed masses. "We will think for you," say the philosophers. So yes, philosophy shouldn't be dismissed as defective science, but its institutionalized (academic) form should be dismissed on other grounds. I, for one, don't need you to think for me to make sense of the world.
