No matter the what ifs, interpretations, or aesthetic judgments, the causality remains unaffected as it is even if rules (causally) evolve. Amorality of universe is then what gives the freedom to roll with that causality or to go against it. The latter demonstrably creates suffering and is futile in the sense that human has no capacity to overcome it in full. If nothing else, there is always death, and, despite all the bold claims to the contrary, the transhumanist dream of physical immortality is just that – a pipe dream.

Now, I could label that going with the flow of causality as natural and struggling against it as artificial, but those would be already aesthetic judgments. On the other hand, if by humanistic progress is simply meant the full utilization of our rationality, ingenuity, creativity, etc., I would have a hard time to consider it as either heroic or foolish – it's simply a human innate functional trait that is aesthetically neutral.
