Maybe I misinterpret your “layers of perspective and complexity based on logical and scientific knowledge that must be maintained in balance,” but why not go with science as it is? Minus its ideological leaches of atheism and agnosticism, that is.

Ad Mahayana — yes, the core is the same, but e.g. good luck to “sell” begging to a Sikh (and vice versa, if you approach it from the side of Sikhism). I think a good place to start is Ten Commandments, especially the second half, which is almost literally identical all across the globe and traditions.
