Looking into the history of religions you will discover that all of them (without fail) are closely tied to entheogens, which I would argue are the primary reason behind our obsession with altered states of awareness (rituals came only later). Also, (and that's my prediction) eventually we will have a standardized way of "proving God empirically", i.e. applying scientific method to our own mind in order to examine its behavior firsthand and in a subjective manner, discovering "the seat" of our consciousness, and in turn understand what ancients called God.
