It seems that neuriscience would agree with you. I found a paper that calls that process "superior pattern processing". It very much fells like your metarepresentations. On the other hand, talking about e.g. religion, commerce, or war as useful — given their short history (merely few meager millennia) and from an evolutionary standpoint the jury is still out, I would say.
