In his defense of orthodoxy against Gnostics of his time (2nd century AD), Irenaeus writes that, contrary to claims of Gnostics, church fathers did possess correct knowledge because Holy Spirit descended upon them. In other words, they were authorized to preach because what they were preaching was undiluted truth of God. It follows, that both camps (that is to say, all of ancient Christian world) were in agreement that in order to preach, one must be in fellowship with Holy Spirit. And, if you ask me, such understanding is pretty common sense.

Now, “descend of Holy Spirit” is what makes a person Christ-like. It's at that point when a person is saved. It means, among many other things, that one knows Kingdom of God (or Kingdom of Heaven, even Eden – whichever you like as they denote the same). It means seeing and treating (!) the world as Christ did (just for the record – if you truly see it that way you cannot help but treat it that way – but that's beside the point). In other words, if you don't know that Kingdom of God is here and you live in it right now, if Kingdom of God is “merely” at hand for you, you still don't experience fellowship of Holy Spirit (and are not saved).

Which brings me to your answer to the question, “What does God offer us?” I won't be the one to judge, but I still have another question for you. Does the belief in substitutionary death of Jesus etc. made you Christ-like as I described it above?

I hope you will find useful implications whichever way you answer it.
