In essence we discuss perceptual ("subjective") magic and technological ("objective") magic. Both are tools. And using any such tool without seeing the big picture (i.e. knowing the answers to the questions you deem as essential -- and they, indeed, are essential) is, to put it mildly, shortsighted.
Hence, you get religious manipulative superstitions on one hand and unironical attempts at e.g. physical immortality, talk about "free energy," or theories of infinite growth in a finite environment (neither of which is possible in this universe) on the other.
And all of those destructive inanities are results of not "twisting the consciousness" as you call it.
