IIRC, Adam simply means "man" as in "hu-man". Naturally, that includes both, male and female. As for the image -- when you come to Ex. 3:14, you will find the identity of God: I am. Each and every human is/has/refers to themselves in the same way. Those "I am's" are identical. You would not be a person without first person singular. Of course, that universal "I am" predates even Abraham, as someone aptly put it. So, there's that image of God in which human was created. And it goes beyond humans. First person perspective is the only one there is. Only that some living creatures may not be aware of that.
