If you look at events in only circa past five years, humanity had a lot of moments of shit hitting the fan that could trigger general questioning. For some folks it was, indeed, a wake up call, for some a reason to double down or simply resign. But most, especially at middle to upper echelons, simply pretend no problems exist, hoping to preserve their relative luxury (or admit some problems but do squat about it). And I think the trend will continue.
The whole affair seems to me like a situation of a person who sticks their fingers into a shredder and either pushes deeper in order to stop it or hopes that the shredder will stop by itself. Well, they either pull out what's left of their fingers and head for treatment, or they lose the hand and eventually bleed out. At least that's common sense. Alas common sense seems to be sorely lacking these days.
