I would say that the cooptation levels of "mysticism" are almost endless (I deliberately put mysticism into quotes, as all mysticism is simply about truth that is not transferable into any form of human language or expression). I guess, it all depends on the level of understanding. In essence those profiteers, you talk about, have no clue what they are dealing with -- "Father forgive them..." as they say. Then again, if we talk about the exo, meso, and esoteric "circles of knowledge", we still talk about appropriation. Just look at the idiocies that are present in all canonical texts of any and all mystical traditions (or look at the self-importance of even genuine accomplished "saints" who identify as such). That, indeed, resembles a rise of an individual human to superhero or supervillain status. But neither heroes nor villains are free in the true sense. Although they managed to go beyond conventional conceptions of right and wrong, they are still motivated by intentions and thus slaves to their ambitions, fears, convictions, or what have they. As I said, the irony is that one cannot deliberately aim for "homeostatic equilibrium" (though, the process itself is explainable and graspable) -- one has to simply be what one is and the balance or peace arises of itself. Some call it "a path with the heart" -- you do (or not) what feels right. But as I said, it's tricky because one can be easily misled by ambitions and fears and rationalize away one's own delusions. Maybe the safest way to describe it is as "child's play" -- there's no particular meaning or motivation behind it but it's fun doing it. And the rest simply follows.
