I would rather use the term "consciousness" than "spirit", but anyway -- consciousness is always "beyond" mind. However, without mind there's nothing to be conscious of (no thoughts, no sensations, thus also no physics, simply no-thing). The best human is capable of is catching the moment of transition when mind and with it awareness kick in and the fancy colorful "show" of perception restarts. It's doable in meditation but incredibly hard AFAICT (I guess, that's where the notion that knowing the true nature of mind that reveals one's true "self" can take "many lifetimes" comes from). It's also doable with psychedelics (hemp is especially suitable for that), but it's a hit or miss. And of course there's the probably most viable route which is lucid dreaming -- there you have to catch the transition from deep sleep to REM.
