I think we've done pretty well through those 10s of 1000s of years without money, even in civilizational settings where money was not used. In effect, the greatest BS was to start measuring human value in terms of work and an external medium as its visible representation (i.e. Sumerian model of civilization which is de facto the global standard for at least the last 4K years).
As for Graeber, I think he has a solid grasp on history, but his ideological bias is glaring. That being said, every job is BS. All human activities are inconsequential. And that’s a hard fact that won’t change, no matter the civilizational model or social contract. Hence, we all are like kids in a sandbox, pretending that our sand cakes are the most important endeavor there ever was, is, and will be.
It also does not surprise me that people who do the "essential" jobs (that is jobs that are directly connected to survival and civilizational infrastructure) and who are criminally underpaid would subjectively feel that their jobs are BS. I mean, if society tells you via money that you are at the bottom, it follows that you would question the meaningfulness of what you do.
All in all, my working definition of a BS job is any job that is involved in upholding the money exchange grid (and the form of money makes no difference — coin, cash, fiat, crypto — all the same shit). From bankers, managers, and "entrepreneurs", through lawyers, accountants, and also all “security” jobs (including police, army, etc.), all the way down to advertisers, marketers, and "influencers" — one big barf. And of course, it also includes everyone who willingly or even begrudgingly complies with such perverse status quo.
Well, perhaps we should stop talking about BS jobs and start talking about BS civilizational model of which capitalism is merely the latest incarnation (and no, collectivism as per Marx and Engels is not the answer as it is merely an equally deranged response to imperialistic capitalism). And that, of course, means confronting the army of billions of ignorant hustlers. After all, the shitty state of our societies is a result of our collective effort and not a result of scheming by some “powerful” few.
