I think the most important problem is the question of what actually constitutes the Law aka Torah aka Covenant. As far as I'm concerned, and setting aside my own experience, there is plenty of allusions in the whole Bible that it's just the two tablets with Ten Words. The rest is simply, as you say, cultural manual for living the best life in Levant as it was few millennia ago. No doubt, those cultural advices derive from the Law, but are not the Law itself.
