I don't think there is "doing it wrong" this "late in the the game." As far as I can tell, it's utterly individual. Not to mention that once you know, you know. Does not matter if one ends up as a blissed out ascetic (not even) waiting for death, or a character playing out the human folly in a controlled way (to paraphrase a classic).
Well, as it seems, and for whatever reason, we were both "honored" to stand with one foot "here" and another one "there" (not that it would be anywhere else :D). Frankly, I would not have it any other way. Mostly :D :D :D
As for your question. To be completely honest, I try to keep my "Messianic urges / complexes" in check. You know, "When you meet Buddha on the road, kill him." Like, I'll do what I feel I need to do and let the posterity and their history books deal with the rest :D On a serious note though, I think it's a collective effort and I cannot point a finger at a particular person and say, "They will save the world!"
For now, I would say, it simply boils down to what hill we are willing to die on. And I mean all of us who can "see." So, whether you carry your "pregnancy" to a successful birth is not for me to decide. If you feel like doing it, go for it. If not, it only means that there's another path. I am, personally, rather picky about battles I choose these days.
