Exactly as you say. With outlawed plants that can trigger self-realization there's a catch though. It's not that people are not using them despite the draconic laws that prohibit it, it's that most use them just to escape into more pleasant worlds or earn money. Those plants on their own can only reveal that all social constructs are just that -- arbitrary consensual arrangements. Beyond that, one must have more "noble desires" of reaching enlightenment. Case in point, most stoners, shroomers, etc. end as asocials or at least alternative or "countercultural" but definitely not enlightened (though many do think they are). Btw., meditation, as another trigger, is abused the same way.
