European here. You are completely right. Umair always leaves out a lot about EU. It would go against his theory that social democracy is the panacea of this world. Unemployment, especially in rural areas, or our EU versions of “rust belt” regions, sometimes reaches up to 25%. Yes we have access to some social benefits, but those amenities come with a tax that amounts to 40–50% of gross income (income tax + mandatory health and social insurance). Then again public transport seems to be pretty luxurious (however, it makes no difference to me as I cannot afford to travel very much), and we don’t have a tradition of mass shootings (owning a gun is generally not considered as essential, and also there’s no way to own assault ones — only semi-automatic pistols and hunting rifles, it’s also pretty strict when it comes to obtaining one). Ah, and we have literal fascist sitting in parliaments (local, national, and I guess some are even in Brussels). We are also not that religious as US, but (religious) bigotry is not foreign to us. All in all, as it seems to me (but I was never in US), EU is a little bit gentler and chilled-out version of US (though we are catching up :D). I would say the greatest difference is historical heritage — that’s definitely worth to see ;)
