As a person from Central Europe I had the “privilege” to taste the real-life impacts of Marxism(-Leninism) firsthand and I can assure you that there's no substantial difference between oligarchic ownership and management of resources and possibilities by tightly knit ideological elite.

Marxism is not rational as it is hierarchical too and, by its very definition, based on dictatorship (of proletariat). The net result for an average citizen is more or less the same – both, capitalism and Marxism, allow the most unscrupulous, incompetent, or mediocre rise to the top of hierarchy and call the shots. Thus, you can argue details, advantages and disadvantages, but neither of those systems (and their hybrids) is tenable, or even livable, in the long run.

With that being said, don't have illusions about those so-called "progressive states" as they are merely twisted in a slightly different way.
