Ah, I didn't mean anything this complex.

I understand that Lovecraft's tentacle monsters are just metaphors for natural forces human has no influence on and that cosmicism does not presuppose theism. Then again, the alien allegory is pretty much in vein of religious allegories, and there's obviously an "intimate" relationship between cosmicism and theism, because, as you say, "cosmicist takes naive theistic, anthropocentric religion as the standard". In other words, cosmicist takes the faulty theistic assumption of our cosmic significance, clearly demonstrates (with the help of science) that such assumption is not true, thus proclaims that we are not "cosmically crucial". Well, thanks for making my point from a perspective I didn't even consider.

What comes off as an ad hominem is just my choice of wording that reflects my frustration with atheists of any kind who look the reality straight in the face (something which cannot be said about theists) and yet, they do not see it.

I mean, universe that does not give a fuck and just rolls with itself naturally creating whatever becomes possible, transforms itself into life and eventually humans. What is significant in such scenario? I would say that nothing is. As you say, the whole notion of significance depends on the standard or expectation. And those are just human projections.
